Details Behind Florida Driver Handbook & Senator Fasano
The Orlando Sentinel recently uncovered details of a special-interest battle in the Florida Capitol that could cost the state $600,000 annually.
In 2005, The National Safety Commission, which operates online driving-safety courses at Lowestpricetrafficschool.com, partnered with the Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles to print more than 2 million Official Drivers Handbooks each year at no cost to taxpayers.
Florida TaxWatch estimated this partnership to save $2.5 -$3.0 million in state funds over five years, and has recommended the state to employ other such partnerships to publish state information, which could save $20 million more.
In spite of those potential savings to tax-payers, State Senator Mike Fasano has been working to eliminate the financial support of private entities to print the Florida driver-safety handbooks.
